Day of the Dead, Día de Los Muertos: Nov 2, 2011

The Day of the Dead, El Dia de Los Muertos, is a centuries-old tradition you'll find to be very much alive today in Southeastern Arizona. This colorful and elaborate celebration is also a time of respect and remembrance. In cemeteries around southeastern Arizona, families gather to honor friends and relatives by cleaning and decorating their graves with fresh and paper flowers, and sometimes with candles and offerings of food and drink. One special and off the beaten track example will be a 19th Century mining camp cemetery in the hills east of historic Patagonia. Join noted Tucson author and oral historian, Patricia Preciado Martin, and our  hosts, Mary & Piet Van de Mark of Tucson's Baja’s Frontier Tours (www.bajasfrontiertours.com), to experience this special holiday firsthand. Martin’s treasured stories bring to life our selection of hidden, historic and even “ghostly” cemeteries in southeastern Arizona. A delightful feature of our day afield will be Patricia's sharing of some of her own Dia de Los Muertos home altar; last year she brought a selection of personal and family remembrances which she assembled and discussed with our guests. This learning vacation includes comfortable transportation, picnic lunch, lots of fun and sightseeing and great photo ops!

Europeans from America's East Coast began to settle into Southeastern Arizona in the mid- Nineteenth Century following the California Gold Rush and the War with Mexico. Population continued to blossom even more after the Civil War, the coming of the railroad and finally the end of the Apache wars in the 1880's. However, this storied land had long been the Northwestern Frontier of Mexico, and that heritage continues to be very evident in these days, as we visit cemeteries on this day trip out of Tucson.
