The Day of The Dead in
Southern Arizona
|
A
memorable look at Dia de Los Muertos with
Tucson author/oral historian
Patricia
Preciado Martin
|
| Delight
in the company of well-known Tucson author and oral historian
Patricia Preciado Martin during this scenic and memorable day of learning and
enjoyment. On the heels of Halloween, the colorful and elaborate
celebration of The Day of the Dead (El Dia de Los Muertos),
a centuries-old tradition in Mexico, is very much alive today in
our culturally rich region of Southeastern Arizona. |
This
is an important time of respect and remembrance. Deceased family
and friends are honored as their graves are cleaned, weeded,
refurbished and painted by their living loved ones. Fresh flowers,
and those of richly colored tissue paper, plastics and cloth,
liberally decorate the gravesites. Offerings of food and drink may
be
dedicated to the deceased, and ultimately shared. |
We’ll
visit a selection of colorful, historic cemeteries in scenic
Southeastern Arizona. Patricia’s stories will bring you
laughter, tears and wisdom about the heart of Mexican culture in
Southeastern Arizona - past and present. This memorable all-day
tour includes comfortable van transportation from Tucson, a yummy
picnic lunch and excellent photographic opportunities!

| Europeans from America's East Coast began to settle into
Southeastern Arizona in the mid- Nineteenth Century following the
California Gold Rush and the War with Mexico. Population continued to
blossom even more after the Civil War, the coming of the railroad and
finally the end of the Apache wars in the 1880's. However, this storied
land had long been the Northwestern Frontier of Mexico, and that
heritage continues to be very evident in these days, as we visit
cemeteries on this day trip out of Tucson. |
